#CSUSocial: The Gear We Use

team-social-gear

Knowing which photo and video equipment is best for you can be like finding a needle in a haystack. There are so many options out there. To help you out, I’ve rounded up a complete list of the photo/video equipment we use to create digital assets for CSU’s social media channels.

When I first started working for #CSUSocial, I asked a CSU videographer, “Hey, what kind of camera do you use to capture such beautiful video footage?” Of course I had, indeed, heard of DSLRs, but I have never personally owned one or used one for work.

I could feel his pain as he realized I had been living a DSLR-free life for so long. But I am a graphic designer by trade. I can tell you anything you want to know about Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. But I’m not a trained photographer. Or videographer. Sure, over the years I’ve taught myself the necessities. But having the right equipment can open up a new world of possibility and step up your multimedia game. Even for graphic designers, like me.

Let’s be honest, quality equipment is not cheap. #CSUSocial did not acquire all of our gear at once. Consider building your empire slowly. Budget for a couple pieces at a time.

Photo/Video Equipment

nikon-d750

Nikon D750 Camera:  Gone are the days of using a camera for photos and a video camera for videos. If you’re looking to capture beautiful photos and stunning video with one piece of equipment, this is the rig for you. The Nikon D750, considered an enthusiast-level camera, is a hybrid full-frame DSLR. It is light and compact for easy shooting, yet it inherited several pro features of the heftier, more expensive D810 – like its image processor and metering system. A couple of my favorite features include a super-handy tilting LCD screen and a super-fast focus system.

Lenses

NIKKOR 24-120mm Lens – This is our everyday go-to lens. It is extremely sharp and has excellent contrast.

NIKKOR 24-85mm Lens – A great lens for grab and go shooting. It’s a little smaller than the 120mm lens, perfect for walking around campus.

NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens – This is a great, lightweight, sharp lens. Our only prime lens, it is deal for portraits, nature and low-light photography.

Sony Lavalier Microphone and Sony Wireless Receiver  – A must-have combo for recording quality audio for videos.

Rode VideoMic Pro – A great option for picking up natural sound with a shotgun mic.

Accessories

Lowepro Fastpack Backpack – A versatile bag to help keep all our equipment in one place. Plus it holds a laptop which allows editing on the go.

Rotolight – For when natural light just doesn’t cut it.

Tripod – Be sure to get a tripod with a fluid head. This one’s fairly lightweight, sturdy and extends higher than most tripods for high angle shots.

Lithium-Ion Batteries – Be sure to always carry an extra battery (or two), and make sure it’s made by Nikon. Cheaper brands are not as reliable!

The Obvious Must-Have

Apple iPhone: I am an Apple aficionado, so I am Team iPhone all the way. But any quality smart-phone capable of capturing high resolution photo and video is a must have for any social media professional. Obvi.
