As the Social and Digital Media Intern at Colorado State University’s Division of External Relations, I have been lucky to work alongside Team Social in creating meaningful content and interaction within the CSU community. However, my time at CSU and with Team Social is up.

It is time to pass the baton along to the next #CSUSocial intern, so I thought I’d pass on some pointers and advice.

Leave the cubicle every once in a while

If the team invites you along for a video shoot, an event they are covering, or one of their meetings – do it. By saying yes, I have gotten to hang out with CAM the Ram, be smothered by puppies, silently hold back laughter during library pranks, and meet Dr. Tony Frank.

Not only do you get to be a part of these unique, behind-the-scenes experiences, but you also get out, beyond the three-walled cubicle that can sometimes turn into a little bubble. Having the opportunity to interact with the CSU community, outside of our online world, is one of my favorite parts of this job.

Making analytics reports easier

One of the weekly assignments of the Social and Digital Media Intern is to record the weekly social media data analytics, then create a five page report of the top posts from each college. I personally use InDesign to create the template that allows me to do the report in about an hour, as opposed to three or four hours. All you need to do is plug in numbers, screen shots, captions and dates – voila!

I learned the importance of a solid file management system the hard way. I accidentally deleted a template because it was not in the right file. So, figure out your file naming conventions and organization before you jump in.

Participate in projects outside of your prior experience

My first day, I was asked to do the voiceover for the homecoming video because the original voice actor was unable to. My immediate guttural reaction was, “OH NOOO, that’s not me”. BUT I ended up doing it. Despite thinking it was not something I could do, it was a new, fun way to participate in the production side of our content.

Jump on an opportunity that may require a skill that is totally new to you. After all, internships are about learning and acquiring new skills.

Seek advice and expertise

Team Social is full of members with expertise in all areas, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Being on a team that works together and shares their skills has been rewarding in so many ways. Having a wealth of knowledge in one office allows for a lot of learning and team work.

Because of Team Social, I was able to participate in experiences I never knew I could have while at CSU. So, enjoy it! It’ll be over before you know it.
